Glass has a very high compressive structure strength and consequently always fails under tensile stress. Since glass in buildings is very rarely used in direct tension, the most important property is the tensile bending strength. The EN standard calls for a four-point bend test with spans of 1000mm and 200mm and a sample width of 360mm. In order to protect operatives this machine is provided with a separate control console enabling the whole test frame to be positioned in a safety cell.
